Everyday driving puts your tires and wheels in the path of debris you cannot plan for. Toyota Tire and Wheel Protection is an optional, cancelable vehicle protection product offered through Toyota Financial Services. It covers repair or replacement when an eligible road hazard leaves a tire unable to hold air, or leaves a wheel unable to seal with a new tire.

Toyota defines eligible road hazards as debris on a public roadway. That includes nails, glass, potholes, rocks, and tree limbs, along with any other object or condition not normally found in the road.

One thing to know up front. These plans are only available when you purchase or lease your vehicle from a participating Toyota dealer, at the time of financing. They are not something you can add later.

What the Plan Covers

If a nail punctures a tire, the plan covers the repair or the replacement. The same applies if a deep pothole damages the tire structurally. If a wheel will no longer hold a seal with a new tire, the plan covers replacing the wheel.

The associated costs are covered as well. That includes mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal and environmental fees, and taxes. Coverage is also available for the all-electric bZ.

Terms That Apply to Both Gold and Platinum

Toyota publishes the same core terms for Gold and Platinum:

  • Coverage is available for up to six years
  • No mileage limitations
  • No deductible
  • No aggregate dollar limit
  • No limit on the number of covered structural damage claims
  • One-time transfer to another owner in a private sale, at no cost

Gold and Platinum: Two Levels of Coverage

Toyota offers Tire and Wheel Protection at two levels. The difference between them is straightforward.

Gold focuses strictly on tires and wheels. If a covered road hazard leaves a tire unable to maintain proper air pressure, Gold handles the repair or the replacement. The same applies to a wheel that will no longer seal with a new tire.

Platinum includes everything in Gold and adds two body-related benefits. The first is paintless dent repair, which uses specialized hand tools to gently push dented metal back to its original form. The second is windshield repair, which covers repairing minor chips and cracks in the front windshield and stopping them from spreading. Toyota publishes the full benefit detail for both plan levels, including the hail damage limits noted below.

Coverage Gold Platinum
Tire repair or replacement from eligible road hazards Included Included
Wheel replacement when the wheel will not seal with a new tire Included Included
Associated costs: mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal and environmental fees, taxes Included Included
Towing reimbursement Up to $100 per occurrence Up to $100 per occurrence

Adding Key Replacement Protection

Key Replacement Protection can be added to either the Gold or Platinum plan. It can also be purchased as stand-alone coverage on its own, at the time of vehicle purchase.

Key Replacement

Replacement of your covered vehicle’s key or remote if it is lost, damaged, or stolen. Covered up to $800 per occurrence.

Vehicle Lockout Protection

Help getting your vehicle unlocked. Covered up to $100 per occurrence.

Towing Assistance

Towing assistance covered up to $100 per occurrence.

Substitute Transportation

Reimbursement for a taxi, rental vehicle, or public transportation. Covered up to $75 per occurrence.

Additional Non-Programmable Keys

Replacement of additional non-programmable keys, up to $250 per lost key claim. Limited to three occurrences.

Key Replacement Protection may not be available in all states. Toyota’s Key Replacement Protection brochure lists the full benefit limits and exclusions.

Cosmetic Wheel Coverage

Structural damage affects safety and drivability. Cosmetic damage is a different problem. Scuffs, paint scrapes, and curb rash on alloy wheels do not stop a wheel from holding a seal, so the standard plan does not address them.

Toyota offers Optional Cosmetic Coverage as an add-on that covers repair of nicks and scrapes on wheels. It is easy to assume Platinum includes this, but it does not. Cosmetic coverage is an add-on to the tire and wheel component itself, and it is available with either plan level.

The repair method is limited. Cosmetic wheel repair covers sanding, painting, or refinishing the wheel. It does not cover applying additional material or bending and straightening the wheel. Coverage is capped at six individual wheel repairs during the agreement term.

What the Plan Does Not Cover

Every coverage component carries its own exclusions. The table below summarizes the ones Toyota publishes. Additional exclusions apply, and your agreement is the controlling document.

Coverage Published exclusions
Tire and wheel Damage to tires with less than 3/32 inch tread depth when the damage occurs; normal wear and tear; vandalism; road conditions found in construction sites and zones. Safe-Guard Products International, the plan administrator, also notes that cosmetic damage to tires is not covered.
Paintless dent repair (Platinum) Dents or dings larger than four inches in diameter; dents not located within an accessible area; dents that cannot be repaired by the paintless dent repair process; damage caused by vandalism; repairs that would affect or damage the vehicle’s paint or finish.
Windshield repair (Platinum) Replacement of the front windshield; damage to any area other than the front windshield; stress cracks and cracks over six inches; damage caused by hail, vandalism, or neglect; damage that, if repaired, would obstruct the driver’s line of sight.
Key Replacement Replacement keys if two master keys were not provided at the time of vehicle lease or purchase; keys covered by a manufacturer, repairer, or supplier warranty or recall; costs to reprogram the vehicle’s main body engine control unit; aftermarket keys or remote devices.

One exclusion applies across the board. Any repair or replacement made without prior authorization is excluded, which matters more than it may sound. Bring the vehicle in before work begins.

Full terms, conditions, and specific coverage details, including limitations and exclusions, transferability, and cancelability, are governed by the applicable service agreement or motor club membership. Coverage may vary by state, and not all vehicle models may be eligible for coverage. See your dealer for more information.

Is the Coverage Worth It?

Replacing a single modern low-profile tire and its matching alloy wheel is not a small bill. Professional mounting, balancing, and disposal fees add to the total.

Tire and Wheel Protection reduces those covered expenses to no deductible. There is also no limit on the number of covered structural damage claims during the agreement term. One rough stretch of road does not compound into a series of separate bills.

Higher trim levels across the Toyota lineup tend to ride on larger-diameter wheels wrapped in lower-profile tires. Those are the most vulnerable to pothole impacts and curb contact. If your vehicle came equipped that way, the math shifts further in the plan’s favor.

The one-time transfer is a smaller benefit, but a real one. Coverage moves with the vehicle to a private-party buyer at no cost, and the remaining term goes with it.

How to File a Claim

Bring your vehicle to an authorized service center. Prior authorization from the plan administrator is required before any covered repair or replacement is completed. Repairs made without it are excluded from coverage. Our service team handles that step with you rather than leaving it on your plate.

For eligible claims, the plan provides up to $100 per claim toward towing to the nearest authorized dealer. That benefit can also go toward the cost of changing the damaged tire with your spare.

While your vehicle is with us, our current service specials may apply to other work you have been putting off.

ToyotaCare and Tire and Wheel Protection Are Not the Same Thing

These two programs get confused often, and the difference matters when you have a flat on the shoulder of I-15.

Common Questions About Toyota Tire and Wheel Coverage

Does ToyotaCare cover flat tire repairs or replacements?

ToyotaCare is a no cost maintenance plan that includes 24-hour roadside assistance. Roadside covers tire service, which means an impaired tire is replaced with your inflated spare. It does not include parts, so the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged tire or wheel is not covered. That is what a dedicated Tire and Wheel Protection plan is for.

Is tire damage from off-roading covered?

Eligible road hazards are defined as debris and conditions found on a public roadway. Toyota specifically excludes road conditions found in construction sites and zones. Damage that occurs away from public roads falls outside how the plan defines a covered hazard.

Can I transfer my protection plan if I sell my vehicle?

Yes. Coverage can be transferred once, at no cost, from the original owner to a private party. Dealers are excluded from the transfer. The new owner inherits the remaining term of the agreement.

Who do I call for roadside assistance?

These are two different programs, so it helps to keep them straight. Toyota Roadside Assistance is included with ToyotaCare and is reached at 1-800-444-4195. It covers a jump start, lockout, fuel delivery, spare tire change, towing, and winching. Tire and Wheel Protection is administered separately by Safe-Guard Products International. Its towing benefit is a reimbursement filed as part of a covered claim rather than a dispatch line. If you are not sure which one applies, call our service team and we will point you in the right direction.

What are the alternatives to Toyota Tire and Wheel Protection?

Third-party road hazard programs and tire shop warranties are the common alternatives. The manufacturer-backed plan is sold through the Toyota dealer network and carries no deductible on covered structural claims. Because it can only be purchased at the time of financing, it is not a decision you can revisit later in the ownership cycle.
