The original company was founded in 1926 to produce automatic looms. The engineers at the then-named Toyota Automatic Loom Works began experimenting with building their own motors, starting with bike motors and upgrading to full car engine prototypes by the early 1930s. With several promising prototypes for passenger vehicles in hand, the Toyota Automatic Loom Works established a separate division, Toyota Motor Corporation, to begin its journey into the automotive market.
